1 Minute With … Pria Chetty: Data privacy laws in Africa have to keep up with innovation
November 2021Across industries in South Africa, women in leadership are changing the face of digital marketing for the better. In collaboration with the IAB South Africa Transformation Council, we spoke to Pria Chetty who is one such example.
The founder and Africa regional director at South African tech law and policy development agency Endcode and former head of the IAB SA Regulation Council, she is leading the charge on innovation in privacy compliance.
She believes that it’s difficult to predict the rapid rate at which technological innovation occurs and the ways in which people will want to share information in the future. But data privacy laws need to keep up, and at the same time protect the right to privacy.
In one minute, Chetty unpacks the ways in which she thinks that data privacy laws and policies in Africa are doing this, and dives into the importance of leadership in championing cybersecurity and data privacy compliance.
When it comes to data privacy law, it’s a very very specific request
It’s linked to the right to privacy, it has to be in accessible language
People need to understand how their data is used, and with whom it’s being shared
My name is Pria Chetty. I am the regional director of Endcode
Voiceover: Do you think that data privacy laws and policies are keeping up with the rate of technological innovation?
Data privacy laws have to keep up with innovation, but it’s almost impossible
We can never predict the rate of innovation, we can never predict the new ways in which people will want to share information and make it work in their environments
The best we can do is follow them and try to come up with a law that is balanced
And that enables innovation, and at the same time protects the right to privacy
Voiceover: What is the importance of leadership in championing cybersecurity and data privacy compliance?
Leadership in this space is about political will
We need people to understand why this is important, why it affects everything we do
And why just that trust and safety in the Internet, and the way in which we use it, is critical to society
