One Minute With … Asha Patel: Let go and trust people more
March 2021Our ability to embrace our Africanness is what makes us stand out from the rest of the world, says Asha Patel, Google’s head of B2B marketing for Sub-Saharan Africa, and head of marketing for South Africa. In just one minute, she tells us about a habit she had to break to be a better leader, and shares her hopes for the future of the marketing industry. Patel is a board member of the Marketing Achievement Council, which hosts the annual Marketing Achievement Awards.
Courage has definitely been the theme of my career
Courage not for the sake of courage but courage to follow my passions, my dreams, and what excites me the most
I'm Asha Patel, Google's head of B2B marketing for Sub-Saharan Africa and head of marketing for South Africa
The best professional wisdom that anyone's ever given me is in moments of adversity or difficulty
To focus on the opportunity to learn and grow rather than the challenge
So the habit that I've had to break to become a more effective leader is definitely the ability to let go, to trust more, and to delegate
My professional superpower is definitely my ability to remain calm under pressure
What excites me most about South Africa's creative industry is the way that we are embracing our Africanness
It's what makes us unique and stand out across the globe
Well where I'd like to see the industry in 10 years is an industry that is completely diverse and one that is inclusive
